Thornton One of Top Swingmen in Draft

Al Thornton

Forward/6-7/210

Thornton, one of the most successful Florida State Seminoles ever, enters the NBA with four seasons of college experience and a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

After averaging 19.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks in 35 games his senior season, the Perry, Ga. native earned Associated Press All-America Third Team and All-ACC First Team honors.

Thornton was the only player in the ACC to rank in the top 10 in scoring (1st), field goal percentage (5th, .530), free throw percentage (7th, .790), rebounding (8th), blocked shots (8th) and steals (10th). He finished his college career ranked seventh in FSU history in points (1,521), third in 3-point field goal percentage (.438), sixth in free throws made (366) and as only one of eight players to finish his career with 1,500+ points.

Improving his draft stock – where he should be taken by the mid-first round – is the fact that his senior season was his most successful in college. Throughout the 2006-07 season, Thornton made great strides in free throw and 3-point shooting, as well as in rebounding and shot blocking. While he played at the four in college, expect him to move to the three as he begins his career in the NBA.
